Pursuit of Happyness, The

2006 / 117 minutes / PG
Will Smith, Thandie Newton, Jaden Smith
Directed by Gabriele Muccino

The chemistry between real life father and son (Will and Jaden) shines on screen in this poignant true story. At moments heartwrenching, and at others undeniably heartwarming, The Pursuit of Happyness (spelled correctly incorrect) is a radiant look at the life of Chris Gardner, a life fraught with seemingly relentless hardships and oppression. Gardner's unwavering hope, perpetuated gracefully by Will Smith, ultimately sees father and son through challenges including a tax crisis, living in a motel, sleeping in a homeless shelter, and even a night in a subway station bathroom. Most impressive, though, is Jaden Smith's thoroughly convincing performance, somehow unexpected yet completely unsurprising (especially given his parentage). If you aren't convinced that beyond all else hope prevails, this movie will undoubtedly change your mind. The Pursuit of Happyness proves, once and for all, that anything can be done - you just have to keep trying.
